Viettel set to be a defense industrial complex

(VNF) - The Vietnam Military-run Telecommunications Group (Viettel) on January 24th hosted a conference to evaluate 2014 outcomes and work out 2015 goals and action plan.

Attending the event were General Phung Quang Thanh, Politburo member, Deputy-Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of National Defence; Nguyen Bac Son, CPVCC member, Minister of Information and Communications; representatives from the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Information and Communications; and around four thousand Viettel employees from district level.

Viettel report showed that in 2014, the Group has continued to achieve strong revenue growth of VND197,000 billion, a rise of 20% in comparison to the average rate of other enterprises, and a VND42,000 billion pretax profit, contributing over VND15,000 billion to the State budget. Besides, labor productivity increased 14%, employee income increased 10%, and created jobs for nearly 80,000 people globally.

R&D and equipment manufacturing are considered to be the 3rd key pillars of Viettel’s development strategy, apart from domestic and overseas telecommunications. Notably, Viettel has mastered technology in equipment and military weapon production; shaping a solid foundation for the development of defense industrial complex, firmly protecting the national sovereignty in all fields.

Its 3G network quality and coverage met all criteria set by relevant agencies, providing full services of telecommunication, television and information technology to clients, thus successfully changed from an operator to a content and application provider.

So far, by launching services operation in Peru and Cameroon, it has been operating investment projects in nine countries with 175 million people. Overseas markets also saw a revenue growth of 25% (reaching USD1.2 billion); revenue pretax increased 32% (reaching USD156 million), bringing the total profit of USD278 million for Vietnam.

According to Major General Nguyen Manh Hung, Viettel General Director\, the Group set a target in 2015 of achieving 20% growth rate, gaining revenue of VND230,000 billion (and VND500,000 billion in 2020), increasing 15% profits and 15% labor productivity.
