Vietnam supports victims of Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy dam collapse

(VNF) - The Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy hydropower dam collapse (Laos) on 23 July, 2018 has washed away homes of over 6,600 people. In line with the support from Vietnam’s people nation-wide, the Vietnam – Laos Friendship Association (VLFA) raised USD 21,000 cash and USD 8,700-worth supplies.

The collapse put numerous villages blanketed with water and mud. Many countries have sent humanitarian aid in forms of human and necessities to Laos, together with the authorities, to search for missing victims and conduct disaster relief.

Vietnam also joined hands in the support. Necessities and donation were sent to the victims on land and by air from Vietnamese individuals and organizations.

The aid was prompt and expressive of the care from Vietnam’s friends for the victims in Attepeu, said Nguyen Ngoc Phuong, President of Overseas Vietnam Association in Sekong province.

On 30 July, at the Vietnam Embassy to Laos, the VLFA delegation led by President Tran Van Tuy presented USD 4,300 aid donated by VLFA members. Vietnamese people shared the pain of the victims and was eager to support Laos fellows in all ways possible, Tran said. The aid, he hoped, would help to ease the consequences of the collapse and help the victims to resettle.

In response, Laos Ambassador to Vietnam Thongsavanh Phomvihane thanked Vietnam for the early and considerable support as the first country to send aid after the collapse. 

 

In 2018, the Vietnam – Laos Friendship Association (VLFA) has operated numerous significant events: Honoring Vietnam – Laos Revolution Heroes; Welcoming Ceremony of the Central Laos – Vietnam Friendship Association.

VLFA also participated in the Meeting on the Announcement and Implementation of Vietnam – Laos High-level Agreement 2018; Annual Conference of Vietnam – Laos Friendship and Unity; Meeting on Practices of the Vietnam – Laos Friendship Association of Hai Phong province; The Congress of Establishment of the Vietnam – Laos Friendship Association of Lam Dong province; Sharing Session of Vietnam – Laos Foreign Affairs Experience among local VLFA of Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen and Hai Phong provinces hosted by Bac Giang province; visits to Border College (formerly Laos School); the Opening Ceremony of the Vietnam – Laos Sport Friendship Exchange in Thai Nguyen province, the 50th anniversary of Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy; the launching of the Vietnam Buddhist Executive Board in Laos.
