Vietnam is well suited to serve in UNSC: Ambassadors

 Swedish Ambassador to the UN, Olof Skoog and Senegal Ambassador to the UN, Fode Seck said Vietnam would be excellent member because of the experience to be elected in UNSC in the 2008-2009 tenure.

During the interview with Vietnam News Agency that said Vietnam is in an “excellent” position to become a member of the UNSC, as there is a huge support for the country in this bid. “The chances for Vietnam are very very good”. Because Vietnam is well-prepared, therefore, will get supports from other countries, he added

Ambassador Skoog thought that “the division between members of UNSC” in making decisions to resolve conflicts is the challenge if Vietnam become the non-member of UNSC. However, he believed in the experiences of Vietnam in using diplomatic tool to achieve the peace.

“Vietnam understands the need to find political diplomatic solutions to disputes… Vietnam is well suited to serve in the UNSC,” Ambassador Skoog stressed.

Fode Seck, Senegal Ambassador to the UN said the tackling the global issues and the different interests of UNSC’s members are the difficulty of the non-member of UNSC. On the other hand, he highly evaluated Vietnam because of its success in the 2008-2009 tenure.

Sharing the expectation of Vietnam’s contribution to the UNSC if Vietnam is elected as a member, Swedish Ambassador to the UN said “I think everyone have high expectations for Vietnam to play a constructive role on UNSC” because he considered having been a member of UNSC in 2008-2009, Vietnam had experiences to support the UNSC effectively.  In contrast, Forde Seck expected Vietnam to expand its contribution to the region, not the UNSC only.

For giving suggestion to Vietnam heading to the 2019 UNSC election, Senegal Ambassador to the UN shared the element of Senegal’s high rate of vote to become a non-permanent member of UNSC in 2015 “the key to success was the communication”. According to Forde Seck, Senegal had discussion and dialogues with members of UNSC to learn from the experiences of those UNSC’s members for election’s preparing.

While head of the Japanese delegation to the UN Koro Bessho stressed, “I am sure Vietnam will be elected”, adding that he hopes Vietnam, when elected, will have a role to play in a very important issue, that is to keep the council continuing its operations in an effective way.

The diplomat affirmed Vietnam is a “very important, close friend and strategic partner” of Japan, that is why the two sides want to help each other in international issues.

With regard to the Asian-Pacific region, he said Japan looks towards Vietnam’s leadership in helping the point of view of regional countries be reflected.
