Special Envoy Water of the Kingdom of the Netherlands visits HCMC

Special Envoy Water of Kingdom of the Netherlands, Henk Ovink will conduct a working visit in Ho Chi Minh City from November 6-8.

His trip is a follow-up on the visit of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sigrid Kaag in February 2018.

During this visit, the Special Envoy Water will focus on implementing the strategic partnership agreement on water and climate change adaptation between the Netherlands and Vietnam, especially in HCMC and the Mekong Delta with current challenges such as flooding and land subsidence.

Joining the delegation of Ovink comprises of the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Dr. Carel Richter, water experts from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Dutch water related companies.

Ovink is visiting Vietnam from November 3 to 8. His visit includes a tour in the Mekong Delta and meetings with the relevant Vietnamese authorities in Hanoi and HCMC. He will also give a speech at the Vietwater 2018 International Conference in HCMC on November 8.

Ovink will start his working program by a meeting with leaders of HCMC on November 6 to discuss cooperation progress on a flooding control project with the city. His expectation is to facilitate cooperation in the field of water management between the Netherlands and the city. Therefore, he requested for a Memorandum of Understanding on the Public Private Partnership Initiative for a Sustainable Greater HCMC Flood Protection Scheme to be signed soon.

The Special Envoy also will review the results obtained from the capacity-building program between the Dutch Water Authorities (DWA) and the Steering Center of Urban Flood Control Program (SCFC).

On the second working day of the visit (November 7), Ovink will cut the ribbon and attend the opening ceremony of Vietwater 2018. He also will participate in the seminar "Building an integrated and sustainable urban water future" organized by the Embassy & Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vietnam and NWP. 

In the afternoon of the same day, the special envoy will have a working session with water experts and the water consortium to discuss challenges on flooding control, land subsidence and clean drinking water.

The  special envoy also will meet  with key persons who are active in addressing plastic waste ending up in rivers and oceans and start-ups contributing to sustainable development goals (SDGs)./.
