Floods following downpours triggered by a tropical depression over the last few days had killed seven people and left four others missing in the central province of Thanh Hoa by 17:00 on October 11th.

According to the province’s steering committee for natural disaster prevention, search and rescue, torrential rains completely damaged 39 houses while more than 6,000 others have been submerged by floodwater.

Floods devastated over 400ha of rice, 20,000ha of other crops, and 4.700ha of aquaculture areas. About 2.5 tonnes of harvested rice and 1,000 cattle and poultry were also swept away.

Many mountainous communes such as Giao An, Giao Thien, Tam Van and Lam Phu of Lang Chanh district and Cam Chau of Cam Thuy district have been isolated by floodwater.

The provincial People’s Committee and the steering committee for natural disaster prevention, search and rescue sent working groups to inspect the situation and support localities to address flood consequences.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent an urgent notice to authorities of cities and provinces in northern and northern central Vietnam, directing the implementation of measures to cope with flooding and ensure safety of dams and reservoirs.

He asked the cities and provinces to urgently evacuate households living in areas prone to landslide and flash flood and those at downstream of at-risk dams and reservoirs. They were also urged to approach isolated areas due to floods at any cost to rescue people and provide them with supplies.

Ministries were requested to undertake measures to protect dykes and ensure safety of hydropower reservoirs while military and police forces must be on full alert and ready to evacuate and rescue people in emergency./.
