Leaving Vietnam at the age of 15, Nguyen Tue Anh is now a researcher in public policy at Oxford University.

Anh’s working days are busy. She gets up at 4 am to catch the train and finishes her working day at 11 pm.

“I have an old soul’

Anh’s father is a professor of economics and her mother is a finance & accountancy expert.

Anh said she likes reading books. At 30, she describes herself as ‘having an old soul’ as she likes philosophy books.

Nguyen Tue Anh, PhD, researcher at Oxford University, is not only famous for her research in public services and infrastructure, but also for activities to help young people.

“I have read books since I was small. My parents never refused any of my requests on books, including the thickest and most expensive,” she said.

Anh always keeps one book in her handbag which she reads when she has free time.

Her daughter, Panda, 6, also likes reading books. The first grader now has two bookcases with 400 books.

‘Studying economics to better understand social issues’

When her father asked Anh, who was about to go abroad to study, if she was aware of problems that could arise, Anh replied ‘I am ready’.

Anh decided to study economics as there were many issues about life and society that she was interested in.

“I believe that everything in society has relations with the economy. Therefore, if you understand economic issues, you will better understand social matters,” she said.

‘I am grateful to the challenges issued by my teacher’

Anh visited a professor on the first day of her course for her master’s degree and asked him: “Will you become my instructor if I can obtain a scholarship?” The professor lectures about energy policy were admired by Anh.

The professor said he would consider it. The reply was considered by the young student as a challenge and she vowed to become his student, though the professor did not accept many students, especially master level students.

Finally, the professor accepted her request, but told her to do everything herself without his help. “You can do this, you will be able to prove your capability,” the professor said.

Anh fulfilled her dissertation which was later recognized as Best Postgraduate Dissertation. The award gave her a chance to deliver a speech at a conference of the World Energy Economic Organization.
