Memorial and burial services for 98 fallen soldiers

A ceremony to commemorate and rebury 98 sets of remains of Vietnamese voluntary troops and experts who died while conducting international service in Laos was held at the War Cemetery in Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province, on May 15. The ceremony was organized by the province’s Party Committee, People’s Council and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.

Present at the event were Senior Lieutenant General Le Chiem, Deputy-Defense Minister and Head of the Special Working Committee of Vietnamese Government; representatives from ministries, central and local departments and the Special Working Committee of Lao Government, Xiengkhuang, Xaysomboun and Vientiane, local people and troops.

Of the 98 sets of remains of fallen soldiers, which were gathered by the Nghe An Provincial Military Command’s Search Team in the 2017-2018 dry season, 12 were identified with names but not with units or hometowns.

At the event, the Nghe An provincial leadership emphasized that the Party, State, Army and people were proud of the brave combat and noble sacrifice of fallen soldiers. With high sense of solidarity, courage, and intelligence, they recorded a number of glorious feats of arms, contributing to the victory of the two countries’ revolutions and beautifying the special friendship and solidarity and the glorious history of the two nations.

In over the past three decades, the Search Team has closely cooperated with Lao localities’ authorities, related agencies and the people to find and repatriate 12,106 sets of remains of fallen Vietnamese troops and experts in Laos.  921 of these remains have already been identified./.
