Looking back on historic visits of Vietnam’s Prime Minister to the US

High-level visits by leaders of the two countries are probably one of the most prominent milestones in the relations between Vietnam  and the US after normarlization.

The first visit since the end of the war

In 2005, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of relations, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai paid an official visit to the United States. This is the first official visit to the United States by the head of the government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after 30 years of war ended.

The historic handshake of the two leaders

In talks with President George W. Bush at the White House, the two leaders overcame obstacles in cultural differences, the consequences of war, as well as the approach to some sensitive issues.

The meeting between the two leaders expressed the spirit of what Senator John McCain had emphasized: "Countries who have been on the front lines can become friends."

During the visit, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai sent an important message to the US Government and the Vietnamese community living in the United States, that ‘’Vietnam - US relations are constantly developing towards the future’’.

The visit aims to boost economic ties

In June 2008, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung paid an official visit to the United States with a focus on strengthening economic ties between the two countries. He had historic talks with President George Bush.
