Laos, Thailand mourn Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang

Laos will observe two days of national mourning for President Tran Dai Quang who passed away in Hanoi on September 21 at the age of 62.

According to a statement from the Lao Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, from 6 a.m Wednesday to 6 p.m Thursday (local time), national flags will fly at half mast and all public entertainment events will be suspended across the country.

When informed of President Tran Dai Quang’s passing, the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the Lao National Assembly, the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Lao Front for National Construction Central Committee, sent their condolences to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Vietnamese National Assembly, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, expressing their deep sympathy over the late President’s death.

The condolences stated that the Lao authorities would like to express their deep mourning at the passing of Tran Dai Quang, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, who was also a Politburo member and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

The Lao contingent highly praised the contributions of late President Tran Dai Quang to the cause of Vietnam’s protection, construction and development, especially in the field of social security and order.

President Tran Dai Quang was a leader who greatly contributed to the development of the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam in recent years, the condolences said.

The death of President Tran Dai Quang is not only the loss of a beloved leader of the Party, State and people of Vietnam, but the Lao Party, State and people also lost a close friend.

In this moment of grief, the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the Lao National Assembly, the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Lao Front for National Construction Central Committee, would like to send their deepest condolences to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Vietnamese National Assembly, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and through their Vietnamese comrades to the Vietnamese people, especially to the family, relatives and friends of President Tran Dai Quang.

Please pay homage and wish that the soul of comrade Tran Dai Quang reaches the eternal realm, the condolences mourned.

On September 24, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha paid tribute to President Tran Dai Quang at the Vietnamese embassy in Bangkok. The Prime Minister wrote in the funeral book that President Quang’s contributions to Vietnam and ASEAN will be remembered and treasured by all.

In a message sent to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Thai PM emphasised the vision of President Tran Dai Quang on cooperation for a stable and prosperous region at the 2017 APEC Summit, which he described as an important legacy for Vietnam and other countries in the region.

Thai government agencies and state-owned businesses will fly the national flag at half mast from Monday to Wednesday in memory of President Quang./.
