Lao traditional New Year celebrated in Hanoi

(VNF) - The Lao Embassy in Vietnam hosted a ceremony to celebrate their traditional Bun Pi May festival in Hanoi on April 12th.

The event was attended by Politburo members included Tran Quoc Vuong, Head of the Central Inspection Committee and the permanent member of the Secretariat; Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Tong Thi Phong, Vice Chair of the National Assembly; Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, Vice President and delegates from Vietnamese ministries and departments.

The Bun Pi May festival, the traditional New Year festival of Laos falls on April 14th to 16th, with several ceremonies and prayers for good weather, an abundant harvest and prosperity.

In the New Year – Bunpimay, the agencies and the family usually hold rituals fo tying blue or red thread around the wrist, a symbol of happiness and health. Together they go to temple for worship, entertainment, Buddha bathing at the temple and splashing each other in streambeds to bless one another. Pure water droplets that make sense to bring cool, prosperity for all things, wish everyone a happy and wealthy life, and praying the risks, disease of the past year. Also, Laotians also hold a lot of other customs such as building sand towers, releases, picking flowers. Regardless of religions, wealth discrepancies the local people and foreign tourists all enjoy the joy and the happiness of a truly traditional festival.

On behalf of the Party, State and Vietnamese people, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh wished the Party, State and people of Laos happiness and a successful New Year.

Thinh congratulated Laos on its achievements in national construction and defence, and in socio-economic development, saying that the role and position of the country is growing in the region and international arena.

The Vietnamese Party, State and people will always work with the Party, State and people of Laos to deepen traditional friendship between the two countries, she affirmed.

She also stressed that this year's traditional Bunpimay New Year festival took place in an atmosphere of excitement as the Lao Party, State and people deployed the Resolution of the 10th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and the five-year socio-economic development plan in the 2016-2020 period.

Thinh expressed her belief that the country will achieve greater successes in implementing targets set by the Lao Party and State, thus contributing to building Laos into a country of peace, independence, democracy, unity and prosperity.

Lao Ambassador Thongsavanh Phomvihane highlighted the success of the Vietnam-Laos Friendship and Solidarity Year in 2017, saying 2018 opens a new opportunity for the two countries to develop their relationship.

2018 is also an important year for Laos as the country is implementing the 10th Party Congress’s Resolution and the 2016-2020 socio-economic development plan, he noted.

The ambassador thanked the Vietnamese Party, State and people for their valuable assistance in the past and at present.

The event featured traditional art performances of Vietnam and Laos, as well as rituals like thread tying on wrist to wish for a year of happiness and prosperity./.
