The visit will be made at the invitation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

The two countries set up diplomatic ties in 1973. Italy was one of the first Western countries to resume and develop co-operative relations with Vietnam after the period from 1979-1989.

Italy was also the first Western European nation to support co-operation between Vietnam and the European Union, as well as the normalisation of ties between Vietnam and international financial, trade, monetary organisations in the early 1990s.

In 2013, Vietnam and Italy lifted their ties to a strategic partnership and approved the Plan of Action for 2013-2014 period, at the same time co-co-ordinating to successfully organise activities to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties.

This June, Vietnam and Italy will co-organise the third high-level dialogue on Italy-ASEAN economic relations in Hanoi, gathering many big businesses from both sides. This will be a chance to enhance economic and trade ties between Italy and ASEAN countries, including Vietnam – the biggest trade partner of the European nation in ASEAN./.
