HCM City get-together marks Japanese Emperor’s birthday

(VNF) - A get-together was held by the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO) and the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association of HCM City on December 6th to mark Japanese Emperor Akihito’s birthday (December 23rd, 2017).

The event was attended by Japanese Consul General Kaweue Junichi, Japanese businessmen and people living in HCM City.

Congratulating Emperor Akihito on his 84th birthday, President of the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association of HCM City Nguyen Cong Tanh said this year’s celebration of the Japanese emperor’s birthday takes place when the two countries’ relationship is in its prime after they established the diplomatic ties 44 years ago.

This year, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited Vietnam for the first time, greatly contributing to the development of the bilateral relations in all fields, particularly politics, economics, culture and people-to-people exchange, he noted.

Tanh added that the association will closely coordinate with the Consulate General of Japan in HCM City and other Japanese organisations to host a wide range of events in celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relationship in 2018.

Consul General Kawaue Junichi thanked the HUFO and the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association of HCM City for the celebration event and said he hopes to receive continued support from the two organisations in cultural exchange activities between the two nations in HCM City in 2018.

He emphasised that Japan wants to be a reliable partner of Vietnam and will work with Vietnam to build strong relationships for peaceful development and prosperity in the region.

There are more than 1,300 Japanese enterprises investing in the southern region, of which the members of Japanese business association in HCM City ranked third in the world with 944 member enterprises, he noted.

Tran Vinh Tuyen, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee said that this year witnesses the high-level delegation visiting and working in Japanese localities and the memorandum of understanding on the establishment of friendly and cooperative relations with the Nagano authorities, marking the seventh locality HCM City have cooperated.

Currently, Japan is the fourth largest investor in 92 countries and territories investing in the city with a total capital of more than USD 3.8 billion. Japan is also the third largest import and export market and the leading source of ODA in the city. The good relationship between Ho Chi Minh City and Japan is not only reflected in economic and trade but also through cooperation programs, cultural exchanges and tourism.

At the ceremony, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) presented the “For Peace and Friendship among Nations” insignia and certificates of merit to the groups and individuals of the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association for their positive contributions to the people's foreign affairs in general and the friendship between Vietnam and Japan in particular. At the same time, the HUFO also presented certificates of merit to recognise their valuable contributions of the Association and its members.

In addition, the new Vice President of the Association, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Luc, Director of Japan Research Center, former head of Japanese Faculty of University of Social Sciences and Humanities; and the Association’s new chapter in Faculty of Japanese Studies also were introduced at the event./.
