Global TB Programme Director’s visit to boost TB prevention in Vietnam

Dr Tereza Kasaeva, Director of the WHO Global Tuberculosis (TB) Programme, is to arrive in Vietnam on July 23 and will hold discussions with the local health sector on measures to prevent and eliminate TB in the country.

The visit comes at the invitation of the National TB Prevention Programme of Vietnam and will be made from July 23-27.

The director is expected to have a meeting at the Presidential Office to discuss the implementation of the End TB Strategy and prepare for a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on TB.

During the visit, Dr Tereza Kasaeva is scheduled to meet a Deputy PM and the leaders of the Ministry of Health to discuss a number of issues related to TB prevention in Vietnam.

The WHO official will also attend meetings with the National TB Prevention Programme, the Central Pulmonology Hospital, the Hanoi Pulmonology Hospital, and the Hai Phong Pulmonology and TB Hospital, as well as visiting a number of health facilities in Hanoi and Hai Phong.

Dr Tereza Kasaeva was appointed Director of the WHO Global TB Programme in December 2017.

Dr Kasaeva was previously the Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Care in the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

In this role, she conceived the concept of, and co-led the organisation of, the First WHO Global Ministerial Conference on Ending TB in the Sustainable Development Era, which took place on 16-17 November 2017 in Moscow.

She also co-led the efforts among the BRICS member states to set up and launch the BRICS TB Research Network to advance collaboration, mobilise resources and catalyse TB R&D./.
