The opening ceremony of the school years lasts about 1 hour, with ceremonies such as welcoming first-grade students, flag salute, singing National Anthem, reading the President’s letter and art performance.

Unlike previous year, during this year’s opening ceremony, the message of environmental protection was concerned. Pigeons, instead of balloons, will be released into the sky, carrying the dreams of millions of students.

This change comes from a letter by a fifth-grader who calls schools not to release balloons on the first day of school, for protecting environment.

In some central provinces, tens of thousands of students will attend the opening ceremony on Monday September 9 due to heavy rain, flooded roads.

In the school year 2019-2020, the country has more than 22.3 million students, including pre-school education, an increase of about 400,000 compared to the previous school year. At the university level, there are more than 1.5 million students. The number of teachers nationwide is over 1,148 million.
