Czech-Vietnamese goalkeeper Filip Nguyen wants to represent Vietnam

With the emergence of Vietnam being a powerhouse team in Asia, more players are looking to represent the Golden Dragons.

Recently, Czech-Vietnamese goalkeeper Filip Nguyen expressed his desire to wear the Vietnam national team uniform.

Currently playing for Czech football club Slovan Liberec, the 26-year-old star is the team’s number one choice between the sticks which speaks volumes given the fact that Slovan Liberec are considered a big club as they have featured in the UEFA Champions League in 2002.

Born with a Vietnamese father and Czech mother, the shot-stopper expressed his wish to play for Vietnam in an interview where he said: “In 2016, while I was playing for a second-division team in the Czech Republic, I returned to Vietnam with the wish of playing in the Vietnamese national premiere league and wearing the jersey of the national team.

“I came to a V.League 1 club and they said they wanted to have my service and would take care of my nationality issue,” he continued. “I stayed in Vietnam for 10 days to trial at that club but in the end, I returned to the Czech Republic.

“I still want a chance to play for the Vietnamese national team. I am trying to be granted Vietnamese citizenship. I plan to return to Vietnam this June. I hope a door will open for me.”

With Vietnam’s top goalkeeper Dang Van Lam also of mixed descent (Russian and Vietnam) this opens the door for the Czech-Vietnamese star to eventually represent the country.
