Chilean Ambassador receives friendship insignia from VUFO

(VNF) - Outgoing Chilean Ambassador to Vietnam Claudio Andres De Negri Quintana was presented the  insignia “For Peace and Friendship among Nations”  in a ceremony held by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) on March 12.

At the ceremony in the headquarters of VUFO.

Addressing the ceremony, VUFO Vice President Bui Khac Son lauded the diplomat’s successful term in Vietnam.

He stressed that the award aims to acknowledge the ambassador’s contributions to the friendship and cooperation between the people of Vietnam and Chile as well as other Latin American countries.

The relationship between Vietnam and Chile is based on the history of the two countries. Chile was the second Latin American country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam as Vietnam was being wracked by war (March 1971). The friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries have been growing actively across all spheres over the past few years. Chile also is the first country in the Western hemisphere to sign a free trade agreement with Vietnam (2001).

Two-way trade continues to rise, especially after the Vietnam-Chile FTA took effect on January 1st, 2014, growing from USD 170 million in 2006 to more than USD 1 billion ten years later and USD 1.3 million in 2017, making Chile one of the Latin American countries exceeding USD 1 billion in their annual bilateral trade with Vietnam. Besides political, diplomatic and economic activities, people-to-people exchanges between the two countries have been thriving as well.

According to Son, Ambassador Claudio De Negri Quintana has promoted the signing of a Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in helping victims and children struggling with Agent Orange/Dioxin in Vietnam.

He has worked closely with the VUFO and the Vietnam-Chile Friendship and Cooperation Association in people-to-people exchange activities and friendship meetings such as the exhibition of paintings, photographs and gastronomy of Chile and inauguration of the mural painting designed by Chilean artist Alejandro Mono Gonzalez on the Hanoi Ceramic Road. The Ambassador also enthusiastically participated in events held by VUFO.

The VUFO Vice President said he hopes that the Ambassador, in any capacity, will continue contributing to developing the friendship and collaboration between the two nations.

Voicing his honour at receiving the insignia, the most notable reward of the VUFO, Ambassador Claudio Andres De Negri Quintana highlighted the long-standing friendship between Vietnam and Chile and expressed his appreciation towards the warmth and support the Vietnamese people have given to Chilean people and to the Ambassador himself.

"This moment brings up so many mixed feelings in me. On the one hand, I’m happy to return to my country, but on the other hand, it will be sad to say goodbye your country and all my Vietnamese friends," he said.

Highlighting great potential for Vietnam-Chile cooperation as the two countries share many similarities in culture and history, the Ambassador voiced his hope that the bilateral ties will continue to expand. He also vowed to continue efforts to boost the cooperation in his new position.

Gonzalo Guaiquil Smoje, Vice Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Chile in Vietnam presents the painting to VUFO.

After the commemorative ceremony, a ceremony to unveil the painting – present of Chilean artist Alejandro Mono Gonzalez for VUFO, took place. This is a painting painted by him and Vietnamese children on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries and on the occasion of his visit to Vietnam in 2017.

It also is a symbolic manifestation of the friendship between Vietnam and Chile, in which visual arts and culture brings people closer together./.
