At the ceremony, Chairman of the Vietnam-Romania Friendship Association Tong Van Nga praised Romania’s growth to become a modern country that actively integrates in European and global structures for peace and stability in the world.

He said despite the fact that Vietnam and Romania have witnessed the bilateral ties expanding across fields, their economic-trade cooperation still falls short of potential, with bilateral trade reaching just above USD 200 million in 2017.

Nga highlighted the Romanian people’s wholehearted support and assistance for Vietnam’s struggle for national reunification in the past and development at present; thanked the Romanian Government’s support and assistance towards Vietnamese expatriates living in the country.

He noted more than 4,000 engineers and experts in various fields of Vietnam received training in Romania, and they have been greatly contributing to national development. They are a priceless asset of the two countries’ friendship and also a bridge enhancing bilateral cooperation.

He expected that the relations between the two countries and their people will further develop in the coming time.

Romanian Ambassador to Vietnam Valeriu Arteni thanked people of Vietnam, including the Vietnam-Romania Friendship Association, for their sound sentiments towards his country, adding that based on their historical similarities, the Romanian and Vietnamese people are getting closer and joining hands in boosting the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two nations.

Lauding the role of the Vietnam-Romania Friendship Association, the diplomat said its activities have become a bridge linking the Romanian and Vietnamese people and their nations.

On this occasion, the Friendship Association presented the certificates of merit to collectives and individuals who have made remarkable contributions to people-to-people exchanges in 2018.

Establishing bilateral diplomatic ties on February 3, 1950, Vietnam and Romania have facilitated regular high-level visits and worked together at global forums and organisations.

From 2010-18, bilateral trade between Vietnam and Romania grew rapidly, reaching nearly USD 300 million at its annual maximum. Of this figure, about USD 80-90 million was from Vietnam’s exports, mostly in robusta coffee beans, computers and components, televisions and electronics, tra and basa fish, natural rubber, suitcases, footwear, and apparel and textiles.

Meanwhile, the European country exported steel sheets and billets, plastic, chemicals and pharmaceuticals to Vietnam./.
